The Carnival spirit goes beyond mere revelry. A popular cultural movement that mobilizes all corners of Brazil, the celebratory atmosphere – whether spontaneous and democratic in the streets or dominated by the market and class barriers – also opens space for self-affirmation, protest, and transformation. The origins of the movement, its constantly evolving characteristic sounds, and the rich regional forms of expression tell the story of a people's struggles and achievements. Therefore, celebrating is also a way of resisting and existing. To discuss the other layers of Carnival, the “Um Tema” podcast interviewed Professor Suzel Reily, Chair of Ethnomusicology at the Department of Music of the Institute of Arts (IA), and José Alexandre Leme Lopes Carvalho, Associate Professor at the Department of Music, both from Unicamp.
