Unicamp's publishing house has eight semifinalists in the 2026 edition of the Jabuti Academic Prize. This result mirrors the performance achieved in the first edition of the award in 2024, reinforcing the recognition of the editorial quality and scientific relevance of the University's catalog.
According to Professor Edwiges Maria Morato, director of the Unicamp Press, the result demonstrates the consolidation of the work developed by the University over the years. Since the creation of the Academic Jabuti Award, the Press has received nominations and awards in different areas of knowledge. “Maintaining this level of recognition is as important as expanding the publication of new titles. The nomination and the award represent public and specialized recognition of the editorial quality, formative relevance, articulation between erudition and scientific innovation, and the cultural and technical-academic pertinence of our catalog,” she states.
In 2024, when the award debuted, with 1.953 entries, the Unicamp Press also had eight semifinalists. For Morato, repeating this performance in an edition that likely gathered an even larger number of entries demonstrates the consistency of the University's publishing policy.
The nominations cover a wide range of areas such as Arts, Education, Economics, Nursing, Science Communication, Nutrition, History, Literature, Linguistics, Mathematics, Public Administration, Accounting Sciences and Tourism, reflecting the diversity of academic production published by the Publisher.
This leading role further strengthens the Unicamp Press's position in the Brazilian and international publishing scene. According to Morato, awards of this nature increase visibility, foster interest in the catalog, and bring new readers closer to scientific production. “The awards are not an end in themselves, but a consequence of the work developed. This recognition indicates that the Press's catalog is perceived as relevant, innovative, and aligned with contemporary scientific and cultural agendas,” points out the director.
Fine Arts
Among the categories in the 2026 edition, the Arts category had the highest number of semifinalist works from Editora da Unicamp, with three titles. Morato comments that the result is not surprising, considering the growth of editorial production in the area and the quality of the publications.
The director points out that, in 2025, the work "Theaters and Artists with Visual Impairment ," by Lucas de Almeida Pinheiro, simultaneously received the Jabuti Academic Prize and the ABEU Prize, awarded by the Brazilian Association of University Publishers. Another highlight is the composer and researcher Carlos Almada, who once again had a work among the semifinalists after also being nominated in 2024.
According to Morato's assessment, the performance of the Arts area reflects the excellence of the academic production developed by researchers at Unicamp and by authors affiliated with the University.
Beyond the walls
According to Edwiges Morato, the recognition obtained by the Publishing House also expands its capacity to take the knowledge produced at the University beyond the academic environment. Although it publishes authors from various institutions, the Publishing House is fundamentally nourished by university scientific production and works to disseminate knowledge through books, encouraging reading, and democratizing access to research. "The recognized quality of the catalog strengthens the Publishing House's role as an agent of civic education, contributing to broadening the reach of Brazilian research, university extension activities, and scientific production within society," she emphasizes.
Artworks
The eight semifinalist works cover different areas of knowledge. In the Arts category, the selected works are: Arrangement applied to Brazilian music , by Paulo Tiné; Augusta Candiani: the prima donna of the time of Dom Pedro II , by Andrea Carvalho Stark; and Harmonic functionality in popular music: a theoretical proposal , by Carlos Almada.
Also among the semifinalists are Raymond Williams and Education , by Alexandro Paixão, in the Education and Teaching category; Clinical Cosmetology and Pharmaceutical Care for Skin Health , by Gislaine Ricci Leonardi and Mariane Massufero Vergilio, in Nursing; When the Knots Break: Stories of Men and Women Entangled in Internal Trafficking (1850–1888) , by Joice Oliveira, in History and Archaeology; Number Theory: A Didactic Approach with Applications to Cryptography , by Renato Belinelo Bortolatto, in Mathematics, Probability and Statistics; and An Interdisciplinary Approach to Knowledge Management , by Antonio Carlos Zambon, Gisele Busichia Baioco and Pedro Fernandes da Anunciação, in the Public and Business Administration, Accounting Sciences and Tourism category.
“All the works have high technical and academic relevance and address current and strategic themes for their respective areas, such as democratic education, training in popular music, the history of slavery, number theory applied to cryptography, knowledge management, and the preservation of Brazilian cultural memory,” emphasizes the director.
Teachers
Papirus Publishing also has two works among the semifinalists authored by professors from Unicamp: New Latin American Cinema: A Network of Cultural Decolonization , by Ignacio del Valle-Dávila, from the Institute of Arts (IA); and Physical Education, Sport and Inclusion , by Edison Duarte, Isabella dos Santos Alves, Larissa de Oliveira e Silva, Maria Luíza Tanure Alves and Náthali Fernanda Feliciano.
Professor Marcos Antônio Siscar, from the Institute of Language Studies (IEL), is a semifinalist with the title " Saídas da poesia: da contrapoesia às poéticas da resposta" (Exits of Poetry: From Counterpoetry to the Poetics of Response ). The work " Equações fracionárias: métodos analíticas enúmeros" (Fractional Equations: Analytical and Numerical Methods ), by authors Edmundo Capelas de Oliveira, professor at the Department of Applied Mathematics (Imecc), Noemi Zeraick Monteiro, and Rubens de Figueiredo Camargo, is a semifinalist with Editora SBM.
Extension
One of the most relevant aspects of this edition of the Jabuti Academic Prize, according to Morato, is that three of the eight semifinalist works originated from university extension projects. The books are part of the University Extension Series, created in partnership between the Unicamp Press and the Pro-Rectorate for Extension, Sports and Culture (PROECC).
Launched in 2025 and currently comprising nine titles, the collection seeks to record and disseminate outreach experiences developed by the University in direct dialogue with society. Among the books in the series that reached the semi-finals are Clinical Cosmetology and Pharmaceutical Care for Skin Health , Arrangement Applied to Brazilian Music , and An Interdisciplinary Approach to Knowledge Management.
The director concludes by stating that she expects the projects to continue progressing to the next stages of the award, further expanding the recognition of Unicamp's scientific and outreach production.
