The National Olympiad in Brazilian History has a record number of participants

In 2025, the competition has 225 thousand entrants; the grand final is scheduled for August 30th and 31st

The 17th edition of the National Olympiad in Brazilian History (ONHB) started last Monday (May 5), bringing together 57.142 teams from all states in the country — a new record in the competition, which will have 2025 thousand entrants in 225.

This year, the ONHB's central theme is “Information: production, circulation, limits and possibilities”, promoting a critical reflection on information, the role of the media and its relationship with the construction of historical memory.

The first phase of the Olympiad will remain available until next Saturday, May 10, at 23:59 p.m. In total, there will be six online stages, each lasting one week. The grand final in person is scheduled for August 30 and 31, at the Unicamp campus, in Campinas (SP).

How does ONHB work?

Participation occurs in teams composed of a History teacher and three students from the 8th or 9th grade of Elementary School or High School. The tests include multiple choice questions and diverse tasks at each stage, covering not only Brazilian History, but also interdisciplinary themes such as geography, literature, archaeology, cultural heritage, urban planning and current affairs.

The competition format encourages joint debate and critical research, expanding knowledge beyond the classroom and traditional teaching materials.

Unicamp Olympic Places

The ONHB is also part of Unicamp's “Olympic Vacancies” program. Depending on their performance, participants can compete for direct places in undergraduate courses at the university — including two specific places for the History course — without having to take an entrance exam.

Fulfillment and Support

The ONHB is an initiative of the History Department of Unicamp, in partnership with the Student Support Service (SAE/Unicamp), the National History Association (Anpuh), the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI). It also has the collaboration of professors, undergraduate students, master's students and doctoral students from institutions all over the country.
