Extension university student continuing education of teachers Portuguese language

This work combines linguistic theories with pedagogical practices to simplify language teaching and bring it closer to the student's reality.

The importance of mastering the Portuguese language in its standard form is increasingly discussed. Whether in school and academic environments, in certain social contexts, or in the job market, there are always situations that require the ability to express oneself and, above all, to produce texts following normative grammar. However, the debate about the growing need for the use and learning of this grammar exposes a complex and unequal reality, in which students and teachers deal with a rigid language, taught in an ineffective way and through decontextualized practices that, when enforced, end up privileging only those who have had access to a good education.
Given this scenario, and considering how the Portuguese language can be taught, learned, and used more effectively by everyone, Professor Aquiles Tescari Neto, from the Institute of Language Studies (IEL) at Unicamp, developed the book Grammar and teacher training in the Portuguese language.which proposes a more practical, interactive, accessible, and efficient approach to teaching standard language.
In an interview with the Unicamp Journal, the author highlights the importance of outreach projects for improving teaching practices and presents the main points of his work. Check it out below.
Unicamp Journal – What is the importance of extension projects for the initial and continuing education of teachers?
Aquiles Tescari Neto – The importance of extension projects is central! In the case of continuing education, extension activities can meet the demands of teachers. Let's take as an example the skills foreseen in the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC) related to actions that mobilize knowledge by articulating practices and content. Continuing education courses, such as those offered by the Unicamp Extension School (Extecamp), have the potential to put into practice a second meaning of "Linguistics in School" that I discuss in the book: the offering of methodological tools to teachers in continuing education. Naturally, all this also contributes to initial teacher training.
JU – How do you assess the current state of extension projects in academia, especially in your field of work?
Aquiles Tescari Neto – With the integration of extension activities into teaching activities—something that became mandatory in all undergraduate programs, as determined by CNE/CES Resolution No. 7, of December 18, 2018—the university's connection to society became more explicit. The university has always been very socially active, and extension is one of the three pillars of Higher Education in the country. Theoretical Linguistics is no different. At IEL, we have a very active Extension, Events, and Culture Secretariat, offering various courses to the community. I myself offer courses every semester, such as "Grammar at Your Fingertips" and "Elements of Syntactic Analysis for Portuguese Language Teachers." It is in extension that the university professor's activity is carried out in a comprehensive way, precisely because of its potential to integrate teaching, research, and extension work in a single action.
JU – Considering that this book is the result of work developed during undergraduate studies and at Extecamp, how does it contribute to reinterpreting theoretical research in linguistics?
Aquiles Tescari Neto – Grammar and teacher training in the Portuguese language. This work contributes to reinterpreting theoretical research in Educational Linguistics by suggesting that this area is not limited to converting objects of knowledge from university research into classroom content. The school already possesses a set of knowledge objects, defined by the BNCC (Brazilian National Curriculum Base), to be worked on by teachers. At no point does the book propose practices or methods unrelated to what is already within the teacher's horizon, much less the replacement of the content foreseen in the BNCC skills. On the contrary: the work invests in offering tools from Theoretical Linguistics for the execution of activities already contemplated in teachers' planning.
JU – How can the work influence the exchange of knowledge between teachers and students?
Aquiles Tescari Neto – In Chapter 3, I discuss "introspective judgments," a method used by Chomskyan linguistics to assess speakers' internalized knowledge—that is, the knowledge an individual has about the grammar of the language they learned in childhood. I believe that the exchange of knowledge between teachers and students can be strengthened by using this methodology, especially if the teacher mediates the description of students' grammar in activities, including those presented in the textbook itself. This can facilitate their access to the standard norm. In the following chapter, I propose that the teaching of the standard norm be mediated by the description of the corresponding structures in the student's grammar to the structures prescribed by the norm. In this sense, the book anchors theory in practice and becomes a fundamental tool for teachers in initial and continuing training.
JU – How can the results of this project contribute to the training of new Portuguese language teachers?
Aquiles Tescari Neto – I've already used the entire book in a course I taught at IEL. It seems the students liked the approach, as there was considerable engagement. The work is divided into three theoretical chapters and two chapters focused on practice. Even the theoretical chapters include sections dedicated to grammar teaching methodology—both standard grammar and linguistic analysis. The last two chapters show how the skills outlined in the BNCC (Brazilian National Curriculum) can be developed, including by leveraging the textbook's content. I believe this book, published by Editora da Unicamp in... University Extension SeriesThis can contribute significantly to undergraduate courses in Literature.
