In an era marked by the popularization of a healthy lifestyle, it is necessary to ensure that marketed products have adequate scientific basis. In light of this, cosmetology specialists Gislaine Ricci Leonardi and Mariane Massufero Vergilio wrote the book * Clinical Cosmetology and Pharmaceutical Care for Skin Health *. The work brings together years of studies and research on the science of cosmetics and is part of the University Extension Series, an initiative of the Unicamp Press in partnership with the Pro-Rectorate for Extension, Sports and Culture (Proeec).

Unicamp Newspaper – How can the results obtained from this project impact the academic environment?
Authors – Clinical cosmetology is a new field for the pharmaceutical profession, committed to promoting skin health while also addressing the demands for beauty and well-being. This work aims to contribute to the development of the cosmetic area, which goes beyond the creation of effective and safe formulations, also acting in the prevention of premature aging and other skin conditions. The writing of this book consolidates the importance of university extension, which made it possible to identify gaps between cosmetology and skin health. Experiences with different audiences revealed real demands for adequate guidance on the use of cosmetics. Thus, many of the nuances presented were developed from these needs. The work also proposes a new formative approach for pharmaceutical practice, integrating clinical cosmetology as an instrument for promoting health and well-being.
JU – How important are health outreach projects for universities? What are the immediate benefits for the community?
Authors – University extension is experiencing a unique moment, consolidating its position as an essential dimension in undergraduate education. The pharmaceutical field, especially cosmetology, offers diverse possibilities for health extension projects. Pharmacists are key professionals in providing guidance and education on cosmetics, offering a reliable source of knowledge for users and other professionals. Their clinical activities meet the social need for accurate information and adequate monitoring.
Through these projects, students develop technical and human skills, strengthening ethical development and promoting actions aligned with the real needs of the population. Clinical cosmetology contributes to the prevention and therapeutic support of skin-related conditions, in addition to guiding the conscious and safe use of cosmetics.
This action promotes health, quality of life, well-being, and self-esteem, in addition to combating misinformation and fake news . Thus, access to reliable information is guaranteed, preventing the inappropriate use of products and avoiding adverse effects.

This book seeks to fill this gap by preparing generations of pharmacists, empowering them to meet the needs of a society that lives longer and desires to incorporate greater quality and well-being into its life planning, especially when it comes to skin care. JU – How much weight did the approach to theoretical issues and practical examples for skin health play in the preparation of the book?
Authors – The book's development resulted from years of study and dedication to the science of skin and cosmetics. We have always been committed to combining scientific rigor and practical applicability, which requires a complex multidisciplinary approach. One of the greatest challenges was translating technical knowledge and scientific data into clear and accessible guidelines that can be applied to pharmaceutical care and skin health promotion. This connection between theory and practice was a priority from the beginning of the book's conception.
JU – Nowadays, with climate change and extreme temperatures, has skin health been the target of more research and academic studies?
Authors – We live in a tropical country, where temperatures rise every year, increasing the incidence of skin cancer. Demand for the Unified Health System (SUS) has grown, especially for cases of actinic keratosis, cancer, wounds, and other skin lesions. Climate change, such as global warming, pollution, and the depletion of the ozone layer, directly impacts the health of the skin, our largest organ in contact with the environment. These phenomena can cause changes in the skin's microbiota and DNA damage, and can favor the emergence of dermatological diseases such as dermatitis, infections, and malignancies. Thus, the pattern and incidence of these diseases have been changing, sparking the interest of the scientific community. In this scenario, the role of pharmacists is crucial in providing guidance on the correct use of preventative products. It is essential that the population has access to reliable information and is aware of the importance of prevention for protecting and maintaining skin health.
