Why is slave labor still on the rise in Brazil?

In 2025, the federal government rescued 2.772 people from situations of forced labor analogous to slavery, a 26,8% increase compared to the previous year. For the first time, the number of cases in urban areas surpassed that in rural areas. To analyze this growth, the sectors most affected, and the social aspects of this scenario, the podcast "Um Tema" invited Marilane Teixeira, professor at the Institute of Economics (IE) at Unicamp and researcher at the Center for Trade Union and Labor Economics Studies (Cesit), linked to the IE. Among other points, she analyzes contemporary forced labor in Brazil, the weakening of rights, the advance of outsourcing, and the current challenges of the world of work.
