The legacy of José “Pepe” Mujica

Former Uruguayan President José “Pepe” Mujica died at the age of 89 on Tuesday (13) due to esophageal cancer. For historian Pedro Paulo Abreu Funari, professor at the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences (IFCH) at Unicamp, the main lesson left by Mujica is simplicity. “The notion that, once in power, nothing changes,” he said.

According to Funari, under Mujica's leadership, Uruguay continued with progressive policies, such as the legalization of abortion, the regulation of marijuana and the approval of same-sex marriage.

“He played an important role in the democracy of Uruguay and all of Latin America. He served as an inspiration for proposing the unity of a moderate left, despite having been a guerrilla fighter,” he added.
